About Us

The business.  Handy Bikes, LLC was originally established in 2013 as a side hobby in the corner of a studio apartment in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Washington DC.  The business expanded into a small cargo trailer the following year, and finally into the 1988 former USPS truck it occupies today.  In 2018, the business relocated from the Navy Yard to Alexandria, VA due to the owner’s ongoing military service.  Staffed by a variable crew of cycling enthusiasts, Handy Bikes has been recognized by City Paper’s “Best of DC” and is proud to have earned dozens of 5-star reviews on Google and Yelp since its inception.  We enjoy our work and enjoy cycling – we want to help you enjoy it too!

The owner. Handy Bikes is owned and operated by Peter F. Buck, an entrepreneur, cycling enthusiast, and retired Navy Chief Petty Officer. After a short-lived attempt at a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he enlisted in the US Navy in July 2002 as a Hospital Corpsman. During the course of his career, he served two tours with the United States Marine Corps as a Fleet Marine Force Corpsman, and worked in clinics and hospitals in Newport RI, Washington DC, and Fort Belvoir, VA. While attached to the Marine Corps he deployed to Iraq as a casualty evacuation flight medic (2005, Al Anbar province), and to Afghanistan with a USMC infantry battalion (2010, Helmand province). He was medically retired in 2019, allowing him to pursue his passion as a full-time job. He holds a Bachelor’s degree of Science in Emergency Management, and a Master’s of Business Administration in Entrepreneurship.
